Conversation with the Universe ⭐︎
Circles of all colors and sizes engage in a dialogue between the universal and the intimate. These infinite movements seek to capture the world's energy and, in that vibration, create a new symphony of colors.
This series of paintings is the result of ideas I have been working on for many years, exploring the consequences of our presence on the climate and natural ecosystems. The drought we experienced in California made these issues even more pressing and current, placing the question of water at the center of my thoughts.
In search of a solution, at the time I was reading a magnificent book titled Désert by J.M.G. Le Clézio, which evokes the life of the "blue men" of the desert. The entire novel is permeated with drought, exile, and immigration, and the images that filled my mind were of immense bluish rocks and sand, under a shadowless sun and an infinite horizon line.
The circle was a recurring form, both a starting and ending point, while celestial bodies mingled with sketches in my quest for the balance of elements.
It was shortly after the birth of my son that I began this series of oil paintings. The first painting, Conversation I (48 x 96 in. - 122 x 244 cm), is the largest I have ever made to date. This experience gave me an immense sense of freedom of movement; I felt immersed in the painting, with extreme joy.
In my Los Angeles studio, on my fabulous 1950s metal table, stood a photograph of Stephen Hawking, one of the greatest influences in my life. His gaze, fixed directly on the easel, seemed to intently observe my ongoing work. Who better to accompany me in this attempt at dialogue with the universe?
